Diethylene glycol

Diethylene glycol (DEG) is an organic compound with the formula C4H10O3. DEG is a colorless, practically odorless, toxic, and sweet-tasting moisturizer.

It can be mixed in water, alcohol, ether, acetone and ethylene glycol. DEG is a widely used solvent. This substance can be a contaminant in consumer products. This has led to numerous poisoning epidemics since the early 20th century.

DEG is chemically decomposed into toxic compounds in the body. This substance and its toxic by-products first affect the central nervous system (CNS), then the heart and finally the kidneys. Eating some of it can also be fatal.

Diethylene glycol TCC (DEG) is a straight-chain double-hydric alcohol that terminates aliphatically at both ends by a hydroxyl group. This clear, watery white liquid is virtually odorless and hygrometric at room temperature. DEG is a water-soluble liquid with a boiling point of 245 ° C. It is also soluble in many organic solvents. DEG is produced by partial hydrolysis of ethylene oxide. Obtained as a common product in the production of ethylene glycol.

The availability of DEG depends on the demand for the primary product derivative, ethylene glycol, rather than the needs of the DEG market.

  Applications of diethylene glycol

A dewatering agent for natural gas

A raw material for the production of softeners and polyester resins•

A widely used solvent

A moisturizer in the tobacco industry and in the refining of cork, glue, paper and cellophane, as well as in the synthesis of morpholine and 1,4-dioxaneDiethylene glycol is used in the manufacture of saturated and unsaturated polyester resins, polyurethanes and emollients.DEG is used as a building block in organic synthesis, e.g. Of morpholine and 1,4-dioxane.

It is a solvent for nitrocelluloses, resins, dyes, oils and other organic compounds.• It is a moisturizer for tobacco, cork, printing ink and glue.

It is also part of brake fluid, lubricants, wallpaper strippers, fog and artificial fog solutions, and hot or cooking fuels. In personal care products (eg skin creams and lotions, deodorants), DEG is often replaced by diethylene glycol ethers.

A DEG solution can also be used as a cryoprotectant. However, this substance is much more widely used. Most ethylene glycol antifreeze contains a few percent DEG, which is a by-product of ethylene glycol production.DEG is also used in antifreeze, brake fluids, cosmetics, lubricants and other commercially available products.

Production of diethylene glycol

DEG is produced by partial hydrolysis of ethylene oxide. Depending on the conditions, different amounts of DEG and the corresponding glycols are produced. The resulting product is two molecules of ethylene glycol bonded together by an ether bond, diethylene glycol being derived as a common product with ethylene glycol and triethylene glycol.
